If you've got a few minutes, this video will be well worth your time. My friend Zach Wise put together a compilation of our last full week of KIVU this year. We called it, MAN CAMP. We decided to test out a program where all guys could come together in a camp setting, explore the outdoors, and take a journey through a mentorship relationship with the KIVU guys staff. If you don't have time, I just need to say, it was AMAZING!!
I've never done anything like this before, but I thought I'd give it a shot. It seems to me that men in our culture have been reduced down to mere shadows of the men of old. When I read about history and see the men who fought for freedom, explored the great wonders of the world, went out to conquer and discover; I have little to compare today.
Sure we have technology discoveries, banking algorithms, but as The Discovery Channel succeeded in pointing out last week during Shark Week, tough men who are able to be challenged and take the challenge in spite of fear is something of an anomaly in today's world. Couple that with the current climate of guys in the teenage world, and you find a wider gap between men who know what it means to be a man of honor, integrity, and someone who fears God; and those who are just rude, womanizing, 'tough guys.'
So where are our teenagers learning it's ok to go and be adventurous, but at the same time, it's ok to care for a lady, do a job well with integrity, and giving back to society instead of just taking?
We set out to see what we could do, and it worked!!
When the guys came to our beautiful resort in Colorado, they were challenged to raft fast water, climb high mountains, and spend time dwelling on what a 'REAL man' is supposed to look like. We helped them see through thoughtful mentoring, they can be whoever God created them to be, and they don't have to feel trapped being a man in today's culture. We showed them how 'REAL women' want a man to care for them, serve them, and treat them with respect. We helped them see how to dream big, and lead well.
You'll see in the video how many of them gave testimony for what a man who decides to follow Jesus can be like. I'm so proud of our staff for not letting it turn into a Lord of the Flies week, but rather taking time to teach teenage boys how to be men in the world today.
I hope you like it.
