Family Time is on the Way!!

It's THAT time of year again.  Most hometown football teams are hanging up the shoulder pads for the season.  The sound of basketball sneakers squeaking in the local gym are filling the afternoon darkness now that the sun goes down at 4:00 p.m.  It's time for the Holiday season to be in full swing!

The airports are full.
The roads are starting to be congested.
Offices are winding down with Thanksgiving lunches.
It's time for Family!

As I've tried to be involved with families going on the better half of 15 years now in ministry, I've seen a lot.  I've seen families with unspeakable joy, and I've seen families where joy is just unspeakable.  I've seen Fathers with wonderful relationships with sons, and Mothers whose love for their daughters is unmatched.  But I've also seen the nastiness that some families choose to keep with them.  The nastiness of hurt feelings, unrealized expectations, words that cut to the bone, or maybe something they can't even remember; have become more the rule than the exception to the rule.

I challenge you today!

No matter where you are.  No matter what they did.  No matter how you came to the distant relationship you're in today.  Let it go.  Let the pain and the offense go.  Be the first one to let the fighting end.  Make peace with those who wronged you.

It's the beauty of the Jesus message.  "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  that you may be children of your Father in heaven."  (Matthew 5:43-45)

It doesn't matter.  At the end of the day your family is the tribe you've been given on this planet, and to that tribe, you owe them a chance.  A chance to make things right.  A chance to forgive.  A chance to live in harmony.  A chance to help them understand where you came from and where you're going.

This season, don't hold on to the grief.  Let it go.  Let it be a thing of the past.  Test the message of Jesus, who knows?  It might just very well work to create an environment of peace in your life and the lives of those who love you.
