On the daily news cruise this morning there's a lot of commenting on the State of the Union last night. I realize even by just mentioning the President's speech to the country may cause defensive feelings to the surface for some, and a roar of applause from others.
It's an interesting study as I read FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, and the BBC. The analysts couldn't disagree more. From network to network there are some praising the President's policy, and some who are calling for the end of the world as we know it.
Some people are galvanizing their support and calling for opposition, while other people are literally becoming paralyzed with fear. They're listening to these media pundits, listening to the naysayers, and there is a bottoming out of consumer confidence in our country.
Sure there's 10% unemployment, and we should be concerned.
Sure the economy slid more in the last two years than in the last 25.
Sure there's physical reason to run for the hills, but what is our response as Jesus followers?
Jesus mentioned a bit about fear in Matthew 6.
"Therefore I tell you,
do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the
body more important than clothes? Look
at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If
that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and
tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O
you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD
We must not become a people that continually fear the economy. For, doesn't God own the cattle on a thousand hills? Didn't He create all things, and in Him all things hold together?
We can't continue to fear the policies of a government. Doesn't God allow some to govern, and others not? Hasn't he called us all to pray for and be obedient to the authority over us?
We must not allow those with a platform to vocalize their fear mongering opinion to dictate our daily decisions. Aren't we suppose to focus on the Kingdom of God? Shouldn't we know His voice clearer than those on the television or the radio?
I'm not saying we just sit by and allow things to happen without discussion and debate. But seriously…We must become a people who are more about God's mission than lining the pockets of the fear givers with insurmountable amounts of cash.
Greater is HE who is in ME than HE that is in the World.
Let's not fear.
Let's face tough issues with a quiet confidence.
We serve a Mighty God!
