Have you ever been around someone who is gifted? Every now and then someone come through our place out here in Durango that is truly gifted. We've had tremendous singers, dancers, climber, athletes, surfers, and all sorts of people who have specific gifts. I mean really good at what they do.
From time to time, there are those who come that are just a surprise to everyone. Out of seemingly no-where with no family history, they just express their gift, with no natural explanation.
It's exactly what happened in Jesus' day, and the people from His hometown missed out on what He could have come to do.
I was reading in Matthew 13 today. "When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming
to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and
they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these
miraculous powers?" they asked. "Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor."And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith." (V. 53-58)
You see, Jesus came from a 'normal' family.
Some religious leaders of the day were amazed because, 'nothing good comes from Nazareth' they would say.
His mom didn't have any specific talent
His family didn't have any social standing
His dad was just a carpenter
And because the people decided to put Jesus in the same box as those around Him, the Bible says 'He did many miracles because of their lack of faith.'
I pray that we are a people who believe.
I pray that we don't put Jesus in a box.
Can you imagine?
The effect of the people's disregard for who Jesus claimed to be, resulted in a lack of miracle.
There is something to belief.
There is something to faith.
There are times in our lives that God wants to do something great, but somehow there is a correlation to our belief and God's Mighty work in our lives.
May we not keep the works of God at bay because of our mis-understandings.
May we seek to believe.
May we pray today for God to help us with our un-belief so the fullness of God can be in our lives.
